Well Surprisingly
I had my first mullet haircut a few weeks ago, after considering it for months.
If you have no idea about what mullet is, this probably summarize it well:
The mullet—characterized by short hair at the top and sides, and long hair in the back—represents a blend of anti-establishment rebellion, utility, and unapologetic individuality.
Woah, I just googled that, and it seems a little bit more than I actually thought. It was not just a haircut, it shows some kind of expression. Even though I don’t think of my self as a rebel who causes troubles anywhere.
The late David Bowie used to have mullet too apparently in the past. Lately I often see people have this haircut too, I think one of the prominent public figure who has this style is Theo Vonn, the podcaster, comedian from The US.
Several motogp riders (sport / entertainment I regularly follow) have mullet hairstyle too, like Marc Marquez, Bezzecchi, Pedro Acosta. I think Maverick Viñales also used to have this style too.
Some have quite extreme mullet, some not that extreme. What I mean by extreme is they shave their side hair really short, while still having the top and back hair left much longer.
Me Mullet Goes What?
Anyway as I previously mentioned above, I have considered of having a mullet for months.
Why oh why?
Yeah I know people are having this style for longer already, you can see it anywhere in Jakarta too. But for me, mullet is not that kind of hairstyle you should just ask to have from a barbershop without thinking about the “consequence”, as it could “raise concern” from your surroundings. Well, they have eyes, and they also can see your hairstyle, especially if you work in an established corporate not in some kind of wild west type of shi.
Mullet cut is like a gambling for your look, that the mitigation if you get it wrong is that you have to cut your top and rear hair to compensate the errors.
If you get it wrong, well -don’t get me wrong, people could judge your look like a what? A Thug! Or other that doesn’t sound pleasing. Hahaha…
So that’s why I had to think about it longer.
Alright, enough of thinking, just go get it.
Some well-chosen Tuesday a few weeks ago, in the afternoon, I went to a barbershop, not far from here, many blocks from where I currently live by.
After waiting for a few minutes, they asked me to sit and asked what kind of haircut I would like to have.
I hesitantly said: “Mullet,” but not the extreme one. I hoped that the barber wouldn’t mess this up, as the first person who would criticize my new haircut is my sister, who always had that specific types of expression, i.e: laughing off my new haircut, and stuff. :D
So there I just let the barber do his job (hopefully carefully).
He did (although I don’t know why it took way longer than expected).
My left and right side hair cut short, but not that baldly short. Also I asked my top and rear hair to be cut a little bit, so it should look “neater”.
After almost an hour, it was done.
I didn’t comment much to the barber, because the barber did well actually (well, hopefully).
A few weeks have gone by. I went hometown to see my parents and my family
Before Eid Al-Adha a week ago, I took a leave from office, to go back to my hometown for about a week in total.
Me and My big family live in different places. There’s thousands of kilometers in between.
I didn’t really have this plan actually. My Mother texted me whether I would come home or not. Initially I said, I was afraid I couldn’t make it due to work and stuff.
We just had some things to deal with in the office after several activites that took days to fix and sacrificed our holidays for that. I thought I have to standby, in case something unnecessary happens.
But as Dominic Torretto (Vin Diesel) said in one of the Fast & Furious movies said that family comes first.
Money will come and go. We all know that. The most important thing in life will always be the people in this room. Right here, right now. Salute, mi familia.
-Dominic Torretto
So, I booked my flight, just 2 days beforehand. The ticket was quite pricey, but hey, family comes first. I didn’t visit my parents in Eid Mubarak day a few months ago, so yeah why not I enjoy this Eid Al Adha among my big family there.
Oh anyway, so far my sister hasn’t said anything about my new haircut yet. So I kinda expect that something about this would come out from my parents.
When I arrived and during about a week there, surprisingly there.is.no.comment.at all. from my parents.
Why do I expected comments from them, especially my Mom, was that she has always had tons of comments about my haircut. LoL.
I remember when I was still in school, Junior, Senior High School, even when I got in college, like almost everytime after I had a haircut, she had always told me to return and have it cut shorter. Like it should be like “buzz cut”, or just have it completely shaved rounded. Uhm… Mother’s preference.
Might also be due to when I was still in junior and senior high school, the schools were super discipline about haircut regulation. I never made it longer, otherwise the teacher would cut my hair in school with scissors, and boy oh boy oh girl… That’s a huge L, you suddenly lose your rizz. I mean, your hair would be messed up, even new haircut could barely fix anything. Some teenagers would probably cry inside.
I was punished several times too for that violation of having quite a longer hair. I mean, it’s just off by like 1 centimeter. Come on, they couldn’t even see us have some good looking haircut, for real tho? Haha…
One time I was punished in front of many students, just like a few steps from the entrance gate of the school. Some of them were the girls. Like, oh damn… Even worse, this teacher cut my hair in the middle with scissors, and freaking deeply too! I just had a haircut a few days ago, I thought it wouldn’t violate anything. But apparently that teacher had the opposite opinion / judgement. I hated it. I mean, the haircut I had yesterday was not of some kind of punk style, it was neat, and not that long tho. Well, at that time, my top hair was never more than probably 5cm. I suffered “humiliation” for that punishment. LoL.
But when I was in university, I often have my hair grew long, way longer compared to when I was in school.
Fast forward
So this mullet haircut, how is it?
Actually, like I said before, this is like an experiment. I just wanted to see how I would look with this “silly” haircut.
Turns out, not that bad. My Parents haven’t said anything about it yet, otherwise they would have commented about it, like probably My Mom would say it looks like some kind of “a construction worker” or… a thug! :D
Is it the first kind of “weird” cut I have?
Hold your matcha drink, people.
Because it is not the weirdest cut I have in all my life.
Many many years ago, after finishing my Bachelor degree, before I continued to Postgrad studies, I for several haircut times, had this freaking haircut: a SIDECUT!
Heavily influenced and inspired by the great SKRILLEX (an EDM music producer, DJ, who I have been a fan of for many years), had this sidecut for many many years, made me have it too. I only had my left side hair cut, and let the rest grow wildly. I live in a small town at that time, and the barber several times ensured if it really was the style I picked. I said, “Undoubtedly”.
Honestly that was a little bit crazy, I have no idea where that confidence or madness came, but shi was just fire at that time.
One time when I strolled around, some random school student looked confused at me. She asked, “are you a Lesbian?” to me.
Goddamn.
To her, I looked like a Lesbian? How?
I just laughed, and told my friends about it, and they laughed about it too.
That was hilarious, but I kept that haircut for sometime, before got bored and back to normal cut.
Aaight, that’s it
It’s good to write again here. Thanks for reading and make it this far.
Cheers!
